The Rowboat Ferry

In picture perfect weather, we transferred a family of three from Munich to Bachmair-Weissach by the lake of Tegernsee on a sunny Monday morning in late May 2026. After dropping their luggage at the hotel an our south of Munich, our V-Class took us to the starting point of our Best of Tegernsee hike. This scenic guided hike in the Bavarian Alps leads to a tiny chapel on a rocky summit with excellent views of the lake and mountains, to a proper chalet for some typical food, and – of course – down to the lake. The obvious ending would have been a car transfer back to the hotel. But not with Munich Wanderland: We turned the transfer into the icing on the cake for this family from Colorado.

The historic "Überfahrt" rowboat ferry and its ferryman in traditional Bavarian attire safely got us to the other side (and no, we didn't pay him before we got there ;-)). This slow-motion ferry has been around for 500 years and was regularly used by King Max I Joseph. And you even get to ring an old-fashioned bell to call the ferry. Quite special, isn't it?
